Asking employees to submit suggestions about improving the business serves little purpose if employees find no actions taken in response and no explanation about why a suggestion wasn't implemented. By the same token, legitimate reasons not to act on a suggestion may exist. A little explanation, however, goes a long way. As the accompanying table indicates, a median 0.8 suggestions were implementated among IndustryWeek Best Plants winners and finalists over the past five years, compared with a median 1.3 suggestions recorded.
