NECA Releases New AFCI and GFCI Installation Standard

NECA 169-2010, Standard for Installing and Maintaining Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCIs) and Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) (ANSI) is now available from the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA). This new standard describes installation, maintenance and troubleshooting procedures for Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCIs) and Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs). NECA 169 is the latest new publication in the National Electrical Installation Standardsseries published by NECA.

AFCIs are a major innovation in electrical devices that are now required by the NEC to protect against fires caused by arcing faults in electrical wiring. Conventional circuit breakers only respond to overloads, ground faults, and short circuits; so they do not protect against arcing conditions that produce erratic current flow. An AFCI is selective so that normal arcs do not cause it to trip.

A GFCI constantly monitors electrical current in a circuit to sense any loss or leakage of current. If the current the circuit differs by a small amount (4-6 mA) from that returning, the GFCI device quickly switches off power to that circuit. The GFCI interrupts power faster than a blink of an eye to prevent a lethal dose of electricity.

NECA 169 applies to arc-fault circuit interrupters and ground-fault circuit interrupters permanently installed in building premises wiring systems for residential, commercial, and industrial applications. It includes specific information about combination-type AFCIs for new installations, branch/feeder type AFCIs only for replacement purposes in existing installations, and GFCIs for new or existing installations.

About NEIS: NEIS are the only ANSI-approved performance and workmanship industry standards for electrical construction. NEIS are used by construction owners, specifiers and contractors to clearly illustrate the performance and workmanship standards essential for different types of electrical construction. NEIS are also referenced throughout the National Electrical Code.

Ordering information: NECA 169-2010, Standard for Installing and Maintaining Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCIs) and Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) (ANSI) is $20 for NECA members and $40 for non-members.
