Is Pixar Planning Its Own Star Wars Movie?

The Walt Disney Company spent $4.05 billion to take ownership of LucasFilm and the Star Wars franchise, so one can imagine that they plan on using every weapon in their arsenal to make that investment pay off. Not only are there plans to continue the original Star Wars saga, beginning with the J.J. Abrams-directed Star Wars: Episode VII in 2015, Disney has also announced that they are developing multiple "spin-off" movies that will reveal new adventures that run parallel to Episodes I through (presumably) IX. There are undoubtedly many more projects that the studio is waiting to announce, and if the latest rumor is to be believed then one of those announcements will be that Pixar will soon be getting into the Star Wars game.

While there aren't many - or really any - concrete details in the report, Latino-Review's sources have told them that there is now a plan to further expand the Star Wars universe with a new movie from the studio that brought us some of the greatest animated titles of all time. It's unclear where the project would fit on the timetable of Disney's Star Wars franchise plans, as the site says that a movie "could be a long way off" (not surprising given the amount of time it takes to make an animated feature), but they do add that the project will " take place in the middle of a Venn Diagram between Star Wars and A Pixar Movie."

I'm not really sure how much stock to put in this story. On the one hand, it's totally feasible that Disney is looking for any way to make money off of their new sci-fi franchise, but at the same time this report is so vague that it could be totally fake and unprovable. Basically, believe that this story could be true, but don't necessarily believe that it is.

At this point in time you may find yourself asking, "What exactly would a Pixar Star Wars movie look like?" Well, thanks to artist Phil Postma we already have an idea. Around this time last year Postma unveiled a number of pieces he did that mashed the characters of George Lucas' universe with the 3D stylings of John Lasseter's animation house. You can check out a few samples below, but I would highly recommend heading over to the artist's site to check out the rest.

If this rumor does turn out to be true, what do you think? Would you be interested in seeing a Star Wars Pixar movie? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.
